The Me That Shines Program: A gentle, week-long introduction to self-awareness through playful mindfulness, simple breathing, movement, and quiet time outdoors. Using nature as a calm, grounding space, children learn to notice their feelings and practice stillness. The experience culminates in a “My Personal Trinket” Time Capsule capturing who they are as they begin the new year.

LOCATION:

TRANSPORT:
For activities held at outdoor locations, a private shuttle bus will transport children to and from the site, with convenient pick-up and drop-off at the Hong Kong Central Post Office. -

Learning Outcomes
This program supports children ages 3-4 in developing early self-awareness and emotional understanding through playful mindfulness, movement, and quiet time in nature.
Guided by daily themes such as noticing feelings, finding calm, and reflecting within, children build confidence, self-worth, and a sense of grounding — culminating in a Time Capsule that honours who they are as they step into the new year.

Mini Shedders begin the week by exploring the natural world through touch and curiosity. Using bark, stones, grass, soil, and plants, children create nature rubbings and notice how different textures feel in their hands. They are encouraged to slow down, observe, and enjoy being outdoors.The session ends with children returning to a place they enjoyed and selecting a small, safe natural item to add to their Time Capsule — capturing “what I liked exploring today” as an early reflection of their experience.

At Shek O, children practise moving mindfully through the environment as they walk toward the rock pools, revisiting our Shed agreement of being aware, attentive, and safe.Each child chooses a favourite stone, holding it during a few calm breaths before adding it to their Time Capsule as their “calm stone.” Through a simple breathing activity — lying down and watching their stone rise and fall on their tummy — children learn how slow breathing helps their bodies feel steady and relaxed.

Day three focuses on understanding big feelings like excitement, frustration, or nervousness. Children hike together to a “secret snack spot,” building anticipation while learning how strong emotions can sometimes affect our focus and attention.
Through storytelling, play in the forest, and the “smell the flower, blow out the candle” breathing technique, children practise calming themselves in a cozy outdoor space. From this spot, each child selects a small nature item that reminds them of a place where they can settle, adding it to their Time Capsule as a symbol of calm and comfort.

Children take part in outdoor cooking as they make niangao over the fire, learning a Lunar New Year folk story about the sticky cake and its meaning of good fortune, prosperity, and fresh beginnings.The program concludes with a gentle group reflection, where children present their Time Capsules to their peers — sharing their favourite moments, calm discoveries, and what they’ve collected throughout the week.
