Mini Shedders
Spring Camp 2026: The US That Grows
Half-Day (AM)
Program Overview

A gentle, multi-day introduction to the natural world designed for curious 3–4 year olds. Through sensory exploration, guided discovery, and hands-on outdoor play, children begin to notice how soil, plants, and small creatures grow and live together.

Using farms and forests as living classrooms, Mini Shedders explore what the Earth provides, look closely at leaves and bark, examine soil and worms, and discover what plants need to grow. Each day builds early awareness of shared habitats and simple acts of care.

The experience culminates in a Growth & Seed Journal, where children share what they have noticed about trees, soil, and forests through drawings and simple reflections. This closing activity celebrates their growing awareness and marks their first steps in understanding how even small actions help living things flourish.

Week 1

30 March - 2 April, 2026

Schedule

  • Location:
    Shek O

    Activity:
On Day 1, Mini Shedders begin by exploring the simple question: What gifts do we see from the Earth today?

    Discovering the Earth’s Gifts
Through a guided farm visit, children observe soil, plants, shade, and small creatures, learning to recognise and name the everyday gifts the Earth provides. This gentle exploration builds early awareness and connection to the natural world.

Planting and Growing from the Ground Up
Children explore what seeds and small plants need to grow. They examine plant parts — seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit — before planting their own seedlings. Through hands-on experience, they discover how healthy soil and worms help plants grow strong and healthy.

Soil, Worms, and What Plants Need
Using magnifiers to examine roots, worms, and soil life, children explore how nutrients and tiny organisms work together to support plant growth. Through hands-on discovery, they begin to understand that plants, insects, and soil creatures all live and grow within the same shared habitat.

On Day 3, Mini Shedders explore how plants look and change in their natural environment, building on what they have learned about soil and habitats earlier in the week.

Leaves and Bark: A Tree Study: Through a leaf scavenger hunt and bark rubbings, children closely observe different tree features — noticing shapes, textures, and patterns. This hands-on activity helps them recognise the parts of a plant and understand how trees grow and change over time in nature.

On the final day, Mini Shedders reflect on how people can care for the places where plants and trees grow.

    Caring for the Forest
Children hike to a “secret spot” to observe signs of human impact in the forest. Together, they will discuss which actions help plant habitats thrive and which may cause harm, learning simple, practical ways to care for nature when we visit.

Showcase Moment: What We Can Do to Help
To conclude the program, children share one small action they can take to help keep forests healthy. This final reflection reinforces their growing understanding that even small choices can support the wellbeing of the natural world.
